What Is Stroke Rehabilitation Physiotherapy?

Stroke rehabilitation physiotherapy is a specialised form of physiotherapy focused on helping individuals recover movement, function and independence following a stroke. A stroke can affect the brain’s ability to control movement, sensation, balance and coordination, and the recovery process requires consistent, structured physiotherapy to support neuroplasticity; the brain’s capacity to form new neural pathways.

At Physio Inq, our stroke rehabilitation physiotherapists deliver evidence-based therapy in the home and community, allowing treatment to take place in the environment where recovery matters most. Rehabilitation in a familiar setting helps clients apply new skills directly to their daily routines and reduces the physical and logistical demands that can come with attending a clinic.

Our physiotherapists work with individuals at all stages of stroke recovery; from early rehabilitation through to long-term management and develop personalised programs that reflect realistic, meaningful goals.

What our stroke rehabilitation physiotherapists can help with:

  • Gait retraining and walking rehabilitation
  • Upper limb rehabilitation, including arm and hand function
  • Balance and falls prevention
  • Strength and endurance programs for daily activity
  • Spasticity management and range of motion
  • Safe movement, transfers and positioning
  • Fatigue management strategies
  • Neuroplasticity-based rehabilitation techniques
  • Return to daily activities, including self-care and household tasks
  • Goal-based programs aligned to NDIS supports where applicable

All programs are developed in partnership with the client, their family and the broader care team, and are adjusted regularly to reflect progress and changing goals.

How We Deliver Stroke Rehabilitation Physiotherapy

Physio Inq delivers stroke rehabilitation physiotherapy across three service channels, designed to ensure consistent, accessible support throughout the recovery journey.

In Your Home

Home-based stroke rehabilitation is particularly effective because it allows therapy to be applied directly in the environment where the client lives and functions. Our physiotherapists can work on goals such as safe navigation of the home, getting on and off furniture, managing stairs, and carrying out daily tasks with greater confidence and safety.

Removing the need to travel to a clinic also reduces the physical and cognitive demands on the client, which is especially important in the early stages of stroke recovery.

In Your Community

For clients working towards community reintegration, Physio Inq can deliver rehabilitation in community settings such as local parks, community centres or gyms. This supports the gradual transition back to activities outside the home and reinforces confidence in less familiar environments.

Online (Telehealth)

Telehealth stroke rehabilitation is available for exercise program delivery, carer coaching and progress reviews. It is particularly useful as a complement to in-person sessions or for clients in regional and rural areas.

Who We Support

Physio Inq’s stroke rehabilitation services are available to individuals at all stages of stroke recovery, and to the families and carers who support them.

Individuals in Early Post-Stroke Recovery

Following discharge from hospital, consistent physiotherapy is critical to maximising neuroplastic recovery. Our physiotherapists can begin in-home rehabilitation promptly after discharge, working on the foundational movement goals that support return to daily function.

Individuals in Long-Term Recovery

For those who are months or years post-stroke, physiotherapy continues to support maintenance of function, management of ongoing deficits, and prevention of secondary complications such as falls or contractures.

NDIS Participants

Physio Inq is a registered NDIS provider. We support self-managed, plan-managed and agency-managed participants and coordinate closely with support coordinators and plan managers.

Aged Care Clients

For older Australians recovering from stroke and accessing care through the Support at Home program, our physiotherapists work in close collaboration with Home Care Package providers and case managers to deliver coordinated, goal-directed rehabilitation.

Families and Carers

Carers play a vital role in stroke recovery. Our physiotherapists provide clear guidance on how to support safe movement and daily activities at home, and are available to answer questions and address concerns throughout the rehabilitation process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Physiotherapy should ideally begin as soon as a person is medically stable after a stroke. Early intervention supports neuroplastic recovery and can significantly improve long-term outcomes. Our team can arrange in-home services promptly following hospital discharge.

Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to form new neural connections and reorganise itself in response to experience and practice. Stroke rehabilitation physiotherapy uses repetitive, task-specific exercises to harness neuroplasticity and support the recovery of movement and function.

Recovery timelines vary significantly depending on the severity of the stroke, the individual’s overall health and the consistency of rehabilitation. Our physiotherapists set realistic, progressive goals and review progress regularly, adjusting programs as needed.
