The Shire of Dungog is part of the Hunter Region and the Lower Hunter Sub-Region and is bound by Mid-Coast Council to the North-East, Singleton Shire to the West, Upper Hunter Shire to the North-West and by Port Stephens Shire and the City of Maitland to the South.

The Dungog Common comprises 650 acres reserved for communal recreational use and environmental protection. Traditionally home to the Gringai people, the Common is an area for locals and visitors to play and explore and quite literally, get back to nature. With over 30 kilometres of cross-country mountain bike trail and purpose-built flow trail, the Dungog Common is the home of MTB Dungog and is fast becoming a leading mountain biking destination.
Tocal Homestead has one of Australia's finest collections of colonial farm buildings dating from the 1830's. The heritage site is open on Sunday from March to November. Its well worth the visit. The Homestead is set among magnificent fig trees and overlooks the Tocal lagoon, with the Paterson River beyond. Built in 1840 as a country retreat for Felix Wilson, the house is only one of the fascinating buildings on this site which illustrate the changes in the land use at Tocal since 1822.
Careys Peak is a peak in the Williams Range, part of the Mount Royal Range, located in the Upper Hunter region of New South Wales, Australia. At 1,544 metres above sea level, it is one of the higher points in Barrington Tops National Park, some 200 kilometres north of Sydney.
